3.6 in a 914

There is an article in the new Excelelnce about a Colorado project car, a 914-6 with a 1995 3.6L engine swap. And unlike flashier 914-6 conversions, he didn't go for the giant fenders or holes in the fender for oil coolers up front. It looks like a stock 914. Because they didn't want to drill through any body components, they dvised an way to put twin oil coolers by the engine. They also use the 5 speed 901 transmission, which I thought was good to about 200 HP and a medium level of torque, that it was the torque of the 911S motor in 73 or so that made them move to the 915 tranny.

The original 914-6 motor had around 110HP. folks usually cut off a 914-6 conversion at the 3.0L SC engine, because of the HP and torque. If they go bigger, they modify a 915 tranny to take the extra power. I know one guy building a 914-6 for autoX, and he went with a 3.2L, and 915 tranny because he was worried about the torque.

This guy not only has his oil coolers next to each other and getting weird air to look stock, but he's running the full power of a 993 engine through the late 60s design of a 901 tranny. He says that it's probaby okay because he has parts trannys laying around, and that it's just a daily driver, not a track car. He had a cool wheel mod to get wider ones under the narrow fenders.

But man, why spend that much time and money and make a fragile car you can't track?
