I purchased a '75 914 (2.0 litter) a few weeks ago and while driving it i am noticing that the clutch is starting to go out. It's hard to shift into 1st, 2nd and 3rd while 4th and 5th are not a problem. Can someone recommend a good mechanic in the seattle area? I also want to get the muffler replaced cause it's very noisy. other than that... I love my new 914!
happy driving ya'll

Re: 914 mechanics in Seattle
Fri, April 21, 2006 - 11:45 PMI just got myself a 911, and the word is that John Walker's Workshop is the place to go for air-cooled Porsches. I've seen 914s in the shop. He's on Greenwood in the phinney ridge neighborhood, between the library and Ken's Market, next to GT Recordings. He's busy, but really knows his stuff. Gerber in interbay is another highly recommended mechanic, but he's not an air-cooled specialist. Gerber is less busy, so you might get in there quicker. I'm going to wait to get into Walker's for my car. If you don't want to come into seattle, there are other options on the eastside, but I'm sticking to topic.
Does your 914 have the fuel injection, or has it been switched to carbs?
Congratulations on the 914! that was my first car, (1972 1.8L), but it was a rust bucket, and the suspension separated on a drive soon after I got it, and no one would work on it, as rusty as it was. I sold it for parts at a huge loss, and it broke my heart.
When I wanted to get a fun car recently, I seriously considered going back to the 914, with the idea of putting a 911 engine in it for a 914-6 conversion. But I don't have a garage, so that seemed like an expensive way to go. I know a guy who is doing the 914-6 conversion, but he's having a place in california do the work, and will take it to Walker's when he gets it.
If you don't know about it already, pelican parts (www.pelicanparts.com) has a really good forum on 914s. Rennlist.com also has a good forum, but I think the pelican one is a little bit better, at least for 911 stuff.
And I'll put in a plug for joining the NW region of the Porsche club of America. PNWR.org. About once a month, they do autocross in bremerton, and once you get the 914 running the way you want, that could be a lot of fun. They also do driver's education and driver's skills (for autoX) classes.
Note also that the annual Porsche parade for the whole country is in Portland this year, the first time in like 20 years that it's been up here. It's in August, and you might want to consider tooling down there to look at the other cars and watch them race.
Anyhow, congrats again on the 914. I hope to shake your hand at a PNWR event.

Re: 914 mechanics in Seattle
Sun, April 23, 2006 - 10:28 PMthanks for the reply Shamus. Yeah, I remember reading about your 1st 914 and it broke my heart to read about your loss due to the rust problem. I knew about the rust problem on 914's before buying mine and although it has some rust spots, it is not a rust bucket. I will probably go with John Walker as you suggest since i'm not in a huge hurry. yep, mine is fuel injected and will probably be taking it down portland for the big day... hope to see you and your 911 down there.
thanks again for the great tips.

Re: 914 mechanics in Seattle
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 1:51 AMThey all have rust spots. Though they call it cancer, it's more like diabetes. just something that you have to live with and manage.
It's a damn shame they didn't galvanize those little square bastards. It's such a classic sports car, tons of fun at 90 HP, and easily upgradable to the 914-6 conversion, if you have the cash.
If it comes to the point that you need to fix the rust, and if John Walker doesn't either do it or have a guy to refer you to, I have a friend who is doing a rust removal on his 356C, and he has a guy in the interbay neighborhood that has done other cars for the guy. I didn't ask the name, but can get it if you need it.
Love the blue, and the rims. I hope you got to put the top in the trunk and tool around in the great weather today. Today was the kind of day that made me wish I had a targa.

Re: 914 mechanics in Seattle
Sat, April 29, 2006 - 1:21 AMHey Mario:
Did you ever get an appointment with John Walker? I tried calling the man a few times before I bought a Porsche, because I wanted him to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection, and he never called me back. I finally walked up to the shop and knocked on the door (as was on the sign) and talked to the man. Clearly, he knows the air/oil cooled car like it was an extension of his hand, but he told me then that he was swamped, and that's why he never called me back. Walker also suggested Gerber as being a good choice to get a PPI at if he was too busy.
Cut ahead a couple of months. I've been calling Walker for a couple of weeks. I like his lone wolf (doesn't even have a secretary) style of mechanic. And he has a website and puts ads in the PNWR magazine, and seems to be looking for new business, but he has not once called me back, when I'm calling to offer at least a thousand dollars work of business, and a long term ( I hope) relationship.
Anyhow, I finally got concerned that I was getting too close to my date of getting the car ready to do driver's education at the next novice day. And had never had John walker answer the phone or return a call. So I called Gerber.
I don't know if I got a receptionist or a mechanic, but the gentleman who talked to me with the English accent had a bit of technical knowledge of the 911, and immediately scheduled me for an appointment in a week. And when I said what I wanted, it fit very well into what he called their program.
I asked for a get accquainted meeting where we reviewed the known history of the car and set a maintainence schedule.
And that I wanted to track the car, and was looking for items that needed attention before tracking it., and a wish list of upgrades. And that I didn't like the shifting, and wanted the WEVO shift kit quote. He said "absolutely" to all the items except the shift kit., where he noted that the WEVO was great, but that it might be the brushings, and there might be a much cheaper way to make me satisfied with that transmission, through the OEM kit and new brushings. and that they'll want me to drive around a mechanic in my car, then drive around with him in it, to make sure we're all on the same page.
I have to say that the plan that Gerber laid on me was very close to what I had in mind. I'll let you know how the first meeting goes.

Re: 914 mechanics in Seattle
Sun, April 30, 2006 - 3:50 PMHey Shamus, I haven't called Walker yet, but i did speak with another shop in Bellevue that specializes in custom cars (an old friend works there). Sounds like Gerber will take good care of you. ...speaking of shifting, I would love to get a short shift kit for mine and it looks like they know about 'em. I'm thinking Gerber is the way to go if Walker is swamped. keep me posted about your 911.
peace!
